In the spirit of celebrating 10 years of Backdrop since the first release in 2015 one idea suggested was to invite people to write about the origin of Drop the Dragon with full mythological license. Here is my submission.
How did Drop the Dragon become the mascot of Backdrop CMS?

One of the things that we’ve worked hard to create in Backdrop CMS is an improved Editor experience. As a fork of Drupal 7, we inherited the power and flexibility of custom content types, fields, and views from Drupal. But, we also inherited some confusing user interfaces that sometimes frustrate and discourage site editors. While Backdrop CMS has implemented a number of changes that we think improve the editor experience, there is still a great deal of room for improvement.
As of May 15th, 2025, with the release of Backdrop CMS version 1.31.0, Backdrop CMS will require PHP version 7.1 or greater.
Currently, the listed requirement for Backdrop CMS is PHP 5.6 or greater, a version of PHP that has long since reached the end of its official life.

The Backdrop CMS Project Management Committee is responsible for guiding the direction of the Backdrop project. Three most recent updates from PMC are: Backdrop CMS was a sponsor of Badcamp in October 2024, Joseph Flatt has recently been added to our team of core committers, Irina Zaks has recently been added to our PMC team.
Occassionally, I find a PR in the core issue queue that is near completion, but the origional author of the PR is unavailable at the time. I just need a copy of their PR that I can work on.
