The client was familiar with both Drupal 7 and Backdrop and agreed with us that with Drupal 7 End of Support approaching, the best way going forward was to migrate to Backdrop. We did not like the prospect of rebuilding, and then maintaining, in Drupal 9. Budget was constrained, and we were glad of the learning required for the Backdrop migration.
The first learning for us was how to manage the images. In the Drupal 6 version they were uploaded and inserted inline via the contributed module, Image Assist. We wrote code to migrate those images and attach them as fields in their nodes.
The Drupal 7 site had been using the contributed theme Responsive Bartik. We considered porting that theme to Backdrop. But we noticed that a lot of the detailing in that theme were not being used on the site. We found it best to reconstruct the essential elements as a sub-theme of Bartik, which we named Bartik Movies.
