Project Overview
Parallax News (https://parallax-news.com/) was inspired by the legacy community news aggregator Rumor Mill News, a long-standing independent platform that ceased operations after decades online. The vision behind Parallax News was to capture the essence of that classic, high-density, text-first bulletin and news aggregation experience, but modernise it under the hood using a robust, maintainable, and open-source content management architecture.
Goals
-
Preserve a Classic Aggregation Format: Deliver a clean, uncluttered, high-volume news feed reminiscent of early web bulletin boards and community news portals, where information density and scannability take precedence over heavy media bloat.
-
Modernise Performance & Maintainability: Replace legacy CGI/flat-file or fragile architectures with an enterprise-grade CMS that handles rapid publishing, clean taxonomy, and structured content natively.
-
Community-Ready Scalability: Lay a solid, lightweight foundation capable of supporting curated external links, editorial contributions, reader discussions, and categorisation across diverse topics.
Requirements
-
Lightweight, Responsive Front-End: Fast loading times on both mobile and desktop with minimal front-end overhead, prioritising rapid scan-and-read navigation.
-
Structured Content & Flexible Layouts: Granular content types to handle news roundups, source attribution, external link handling, and editorial commentary seamlessly.
-
Reliable Caching & Low Server Footprint: Capable of running efficiently on modest hosting environments while effortlessly withstanding sudden spikes in reader traffic.
-
Future Extensibility: Simple integration pathways for automated/semi-automated feeds, user submissions, and community features without bloated third-party dependencies.
Why was Backdrop chosen for this project?
Backdrop CMS proved to be the ideal platform for the project. By taking advantage of Backdrop’s native layout system, core Views, and lightweight database abstraction, Parallax News achieved:
-
Blazing Performance: Instant page loads and efficient resource utilisation, ensuring high information density without sacrificing speed.
-
Streamlined Content Workflow: Curators can post, categorise, and link stories in seconds using Backdrop’s refined administrative interface.
-
A Modern Homage: The site successfully honours the community-driven newsboard model of the past while running on modern PHP standards, semantic HTML, and an easily upgradeable, sustainable open-source CMS stack.
