The Backdrop community is proud to announce the release of version 1.29 of Backdrop CMS!
As part of our commitment to deliver the most usable product, "minor" releases come out three times a year, on a regular schedule. This allows site maintainers to know when to expect updates, and they can plan accordingly. (See https://backdropcms.org/releases for more information on this)
Version 1.29 includes the following new features and enhancements:
Layout Improvements
Add layout configuration options to the content type admin area. #2894
The Backdrop CMS layout system is very flexible and powerful, but not all of it's features are easy to discover if you are not aware of them. The latest release of Backdrop CMS comes with some nice upgrades to the Layout system along with some changes to the UI that will help you discover the power of field blocks.
The new "Manage Layouts" tab on each content type will help you quickly create a layout specific to that content type, which also makes field blocks easily accessible.
Visibility condition for 200/403/404 response codes
Add a visibility condition for 200/403/404 response codes. #6016
This latest version of Backdrop includes a new visibility condition which allows you to have custom layouts for your Page Not Found and Access Denied pages, or alternatively, display specific blocks based upon those conditions.
File type icon for views
Add new file type icon views field handler. #6588
Views now includes a new option for files: An icon to identify the type of file. This views field leverages the new Phosphor icons that were added in Backdrop 1.28.
Automatically download translation files at install time.
Automatically download translation files at install time. #6660
Starting with BackdropCMS version 1.29, you will be able to select your preferred language as step one in the installation process and automatically enable the appropriate translation files, replacing the previous process of adding these files manually.

The next (our 30th) minor release of Backdrop will be January 15, 2025. We are already making good progress on some great new features for this milestone release.
